SUMMARY:McConnell Library
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 24th                  7 pm \nMcConnell Library (Sydney) \nAuthor Reading: Gloria Ann Wesley \n  \nJoin African Nova Scotian author\, educator\, and historian Gloria Ann Wesley for a passionate talk on her One Book Nova Scotia nominated title ‘If This Is Freedom’. \n‘If This Is Freedom’ continues the story of struggle for Loyalist settlers in Nova Scotia after the American Revolutionary War. In the black settlement of Birchtown\, times are especially hard for the former slaves. They face the difficulties of a hardscrabble existence and continued discrimination from their white counterparts. \n  \nGloria will also present some of the historical context around the origins of African Nova Scotians – the Loyalists\, Refugees of 1812\, Maroons and immigrants who migrated to communities like Whitney Pier for work and better lives. Gloria’s companion books ‘Chasing Freedom’ and ‘If This Is Freedom’ share black history with us in a way that is both honest and emotional. \n
