The CBU Students’ Union and nine other Canadian Federation of Students member schools have issued an open letter, citing various concerns about the national organization.

They say the federation doesn’t take proper meeting minutes or post them online, staff voices are dominant over those of students; and there’s a lack of room for dissent and constructive criticism.

Member schools will address these issues at the Federation’s annual General Meeting in November.

Meanwhile, Cape Breton University has decided against laying off faculty as it tries to deal with a $1.3 million budget shortfall.

The university’s board of governors voted yesterday on a plan to boost revenues and increase enrollment.

Earlier, it told the Faculty Association there might need to be layoffs, but now the university is hoping to avoid that through attrition and running deficits.

C-B-U will also try to attract about 600 more international students.
