Clarke Re-Elected Mayor; Two Incumbents Lose CBRM Seats
Results are in for municipal elections across the province. Polls closed in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality at 7pm last night and Cecil Clarke will return as mayor after a close win over challenger Rankin MacSween. Clarke won with just 52 percent of the vote to MacSween’s 48 percent. Other incumbents returning to council are: Clarence Prince (District 1) ; Eldon MacDonald (District 5), Ray Paruch (District 6); Ivan Doncaster (District 7); George MacDonald (District 9); and Jim MacLeod (District 12). Sitting incumbents losing seats were Kevin Saccary losing District 8 to Amanda McDougall; and Lowell Cormier who lost District 11 to Kendra Coombes; The rest of winners for seats without an incumbent running were: Earlene MacMullin (District 2); Esmond “Blue” Marshall (District 3); Steve Gilepsie (District 4); and Darren Bruckschwaiger (District 10) who trounced former MLA Dave Wilson who came in a distant third in that race with just 15-percent of the vote.
